The presentation will cover all of the key parasites commonly found on cats and dogs in the UK and Ireland. This includes ectoparasites: fleas, ticks, mites (sarcoptes, demodex and ear mites caused by O. cynotis) and endoparasites: roundworm, lungworm and tapeworm. It will briefly mention some other less common parasite or those of relevance but not found in the UK such as hookworm and heartworm. The presentation will cover why vet professionals should be aware of these parasites as well as key facts related to each parasite group. The life cycle of each parasite will be discussed in detail including reference to any potential zoonotic risk.

The presentation will discuss the control of these parasites including integrated flea control in the face of a home infestation as well as comparing worming protocols of quarterly versus monthly in relation to egg/larvae shedding. Risk check tools including Parassess® will be discussed, providing pet owners with the ability to easily assess their pets risk to the key parasites in the UK and Ireland.
