Research indicates that 15-20% of the population is neurodivergent, with this percentage being significantly higher in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). This means that at least one in five of our colleagues in the veterinary teams we work in perceive and interact with the world differently than the majority. The neurodivergent community includes individuals who identify as autistic, ADHD, dyslexic, and OCD, among other hereditary and acquired neurological differences.

Just like all forms of diversity, neurodiversity brings unique strengths and benefits to a team, though it also presents certain challenges. In this discussion, we explore what it means to be neurodivergent in the veterinary professions, how we can foster greater inclusivity for both colleagues and clients, and how to adopt a strengths-based approach to these differences.
